        The US-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) announced its ground-breaking discovery of gravitational waves on Thursday (Feb 11), which fulfilled the prediction of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity a century ago.
        周四,美國(guó)激光干涉引力波天文臺(tái)(簡(jiǎn)稱LIGO)宣布引力波研究取得重大突破,填補(bǔ)了一個(gè)世紀(jì)前愛(ài)因斯坦廣義相對(duì)論的預(yù)測(cè)。
        The new discovery has encouraged further studies into gravitational waves around the world, with China accelerating its domestic research, said Li Miao, dean of the Institute of Astronomy and Space Science of the university in China’s Guangdong Province in the south.
        廣東中山大學(xué)天文與空間科學(xué)研究院院長(zhǎng)李淼稱,這一新發(fā)現(xiàn)將激發(fā)全球范圍內(nèi)對(duì)引力波開(kāi)展更深的研究,同時(shí)也將加速中國(guó)本土的引力波研究。
        According to Li, Tianqin has already made progress on some key technologies and will be carried out in four stages over the next 15 to 20 years, including the last step of launching three high-orbit satellites to detect gravitational waves.
        他還介紹道,“天琴計(jì)劃”已經(jīng)在一些關(guān)鍵技術(shù)上取得了進(jìn)展,該計(jì)劃將在未來(lái)15到20年間通過(guò)四個(gè)階段實(shí)施,最后階段將發(fā)射三顆高軌道衛(wèi)星來(lái)探測(cè)引力波。
        The university plans to build a 5,000-square-meter observatory and a new lab occupying more than 10,000 square meters on Fenghuang Mountain in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, according to Xinhua.
        新華社報(bào)道,中山大學(xué)計(jì)劃修建一個(gè)5000平方米的天文臺(tái),并在廣東珠海的鳳凰山上新建占地10000平方米的實(shí)驗(yàn)室。
        Chen Yanbei, scientist with LIGO, said Tianqin will study the gravitational waves in the space, which is different from research made by the US ground-based observatory.
        LIGO科學(xué)家Chen Yanbei稱,“天琴計(jì)劃”將在太空中研究引力波,不同于美國(guó)通過(guò)地面天文臺(tái)對(duì)引力波進(jìn)行研究。
        "Tianqin will likely collect more information about the phenomenon, as a larger black hole may be detected in space compared with one detected on the ground," said Chen.
        “同地面探測(cè)相比,在太空中能探測(cè)到更大的黑洞,因此‘天琴計(jì)劃’將能搜集到更多關(guān)于這種現(xiàn)象的信息?!彼f(shuō)道。
        Sun Yat-sen University is willing to co-operate with other institutions in China as well as around the globe to carry out its project, Li added.
        李淼還說(shuō)道,中山大學(xué)希望同國(guó)內(nèi)乃至全球的其他研究機(jī)構(gòu)合作,共同完成這一項(xiàng)目。
